Tantalum-tungsten alloys are refractory metals that maintain useful physical and chemical properties even at high temperatures. Tantalum-Tungsten alloys are characterized by a high melting point and tensile strength. The properties of the final alloy are a combination of the properties of two elements: tungsten, which has the highest melting point in the periodic table, and tantalum, which has high corrosion resistance.
Tantalum-tungsten alloys usually vary in tungsten percentage. Some common variants are:
(Ta {{0}}.5% W) → also known as "Tantalum alloy 63 metal". The percentage of tungsten is about 2% to 3% and contains 0.5% niobium. The alloy has good corrosion resistance and performs well at high temperatures. An example application is piping in the chemical industry.
(Ta - 7.5% W) → Also known as "Tantalum Alloy 61 Metal", with a tungsten content between 7% and 8%. This alloy differs from other alloys in that it has a high resilience modulus while maintaining its fire resistance.
(Ta - 10% W) → Also known as "Tantalum 60 metal", it contains 9 to 11% tungsten. This alloy is less ductile than other alloys and exhibits lower plasticity. Applications include high temperature, highly corrosive environments such as aerospace components, furnaces and nuclear power plant piping.
